Uber & Rideshare Tax FAQs

1. Do Uber drivers need to register for GST in Australia?

Yes. If you provide ride-sourcing services such as Uber or DiDi, you generally need to register for GST regardless of your turnover. You also need an ABN and must report your rideshare income correctly.

2. Can Uber drivers claim vehicle expenses?

Yes. You may be able to claim the business-use portion of eligible vehicle expenses. Depending on your circumstances, you may use the cents per kilometre method or the logbook method, and private use must be excluded.

3. What if I have a PAYG job and drive Uber part-time?

Your PAYG salary and your Uber or rideshare business income are both reported in your tax return. Even if you only drive casually or on weekends, rideshare income is generally assessable income and must be declared.

4. Can you help with both BAS and tax returns?

Yes. Baron Tax & Accounting can assist with ABN and GST registration, BAS lodgements and annual tax returns, including rideshare income, GST and eligible vehicle expense claims.

5. Do Uber Eats or food delivery drivers need to register for GST?

Not necessarily. The special GST registration rule applies to ride-sourcing services such as Uber and DiDi. Food delivery income on its own is generally subject to the normal GST registration threshold, so the treatment can differ from passenger rideshare driving.

6. How long does an Uber vehicle logbook need to cover?

A valid logbook generally needs to cover at least 12 continuous weeks that are representative of your normal travel. Once established, it can generally be used for up to 5 income years, provided your circumstances have not materially changed and you keep the required odometer records.
